Some helpful practical hints on printing and creating posters:
  • The Geology department printer is only 36 inches wide, so do not create a poster with both dimensions greater than that, unless you want to shrink it later!
  • Our department poster printer is free, but if there are problems with this printer (and there usually are...) you can also ask Biology to print your poster for free. Also, Environmental design in building 3 and several other services print for a reasonable fee.
  • PowerPoint posters have a maximum width that is not as wide as some conferences allow, so check and see if PowerPoint will be able to create the poster that you want; Adobe Illustrator is more versatile, but also has a steeper learning curve.

Printing from PowerPoint in the lab
Pre step – Make sure there are no blinking lights on the printer, and the Printer says "Ready."
  1. Once you have finished your poster and are ready to print, go to Print.
  2. Under Printer, select “HP DesignJet 1055CM by HP.”
  3. Select Printer Properties
    1. Under Paper Size, select “Landscape”
    2. Under Application Page Size, scroll to and select “more sizes.”
    3. Input size of your poster (ex: 48 in x 36 in. the max height of the poster is 36 in)
    4. Press OK
  4. After these steps, the print preview should adjust to the poster size you are doing
    1. To check this, check the zoom button
  5. Press Print
  6. The Printer might take a while (about 10-15 minutes), but as long as it says “receiving” then it should be working
  7. Make sure to let it dry!
